Well here we go. The first day of the tour we have been
working toward for months. We finally left Heathrow at 16.50 in a Boeing 747. Along
with the other 424 passengers, Adrian and I have been joined by 100 other participants of
'The China Bike Ride', most of whom appear as apprehensive as us. The take off was
fine although the initial climb to our
cruising height of 35000 ft (10668m) was bumpy due to the showers around London |

| I wrote this on the plane whilst enjoying a nice glass
of Chardonnay, courtesy of British Airways, and our meal was served soon.
The flight took us over Norway, Sweden and then Russia and we were due to land at Beijing at 0930hrs on 06/06/99. |
Adrian fell asleep despite all the things he
said about being unable to do so on a plane. It doesn't take much wine to send him
off! We travelled over Russia cruising at about 570 mph (970kph)
with the plane burning
approx. 2800
gallons of fuel per hour (12500ltrs). I didn't know that, I read it in that little book in
the flap in front of you. You know the one you look in between food and films.
My turn to try and get some sleep now! |

What a sight to wake up to.
No not Adrian, the sunrise over our wingtip.
I didn't really know if it should be sunrise but it certainly looked like one. We have both
had a short sleep having enjoyed the food and drink that British Airways supplied us with.
The flight was quite comfortable and was due to land on time at Beijing. |
